GILLES GRETHEN

The 1994 born guitarist and composer Gilles Grethen belongs to the new generation of Luxembourgish jazz musicians. As the son of two musicians, he inherited his musicality and began his classical music education at the age of 4. After small “detours” via the violin and the clarinet, Gilles Grethen discovered age 14 his passion for jazz and the guitar. He studied with Greg Lamy and Jacques Pirotton at the Luxembourg City Conservatory where he completed his studies in jazz guitar in 2015. From 2016 to 2020, Grethen studied jazz guitar with Martin Schulte at the University for Music Saar in Saarbrücken. In 2022, he completed a master with Jürgen Friedrich in jazz composition and arrangement at the University for Music and Performing Arts in Mannheim. Since 2022 he is completing his master in Mannheim in Jazz Guitar.

Besides his Gilles Grethen Quartet, he also plays with the Nu-Jazz band Linq and the Klezmer trio JEM. The focus of his artistic work is on composing and arranging as well as the artistic analysis of other artists' repertoires such as in projects with music by Kenny Wheeler or Kurt Rosenwinkel. Other projects of Grethen include compositions for the Luxembourg National Jazz Orchestra as well as the Opus78 Orchestra, both commissioned by the Ministry of Culture.Don’t worry about sounding professional.
